A new approach to the endgame. The authors, both experienced grandmasters and chess trainers, discuss the problems that players - from junior/club level to grandmasters - have in coping with the endgame. Standard endgame methods are explained, as well as typical techniques required in such tricky endings as rook and pawn, opposite-coloured bishops, rook and bishop v rook, etc. Examples from former world champion Anatoly Karpov's endgame practice are also provided as a model for correct play. An up-to-date endgame book with lessons to learn from recent tournament play and even computer intelligence.
Alexander Beliavsky, World Junior Champion in 1973, has been among the world's elite for nearly 20 years. He has won the USSR Championship several times. He was Garry Kasparov's personal coach during the 1993 World Championship match against Nigel Short. Adrian Mikhalchishin is a renowned Ukranian theoretician who often writes about openings and endgames. He competed in the USSR Championship on four occasions.
